It begins to feel like the entire movie is going to roll with this kind of energy throughout. Even though there were clear green screen/cgi issues within that scene, and we didn’t really care about individual characters as much, it was (at least) exciting. At this point, we know what Emmerich does as a director. His style has never changed, and neither has his focus on what he believes to be important in his films. Here, the epic-nature if this story is what (obviously) stood out from the script, so he leans into that. Every slow-moving camera pan, buildup of… What do you get when you make a movie about America's heroic past financed by Chinese producers? Woody Harrelson, Dennis Quaid and Aaron Eckhart absolutely phoning it in with "you've got me for a weekend" performances as Nimitz, Halsey, and Doolittle with the bigger roles filled out by an assortment of Pizzagate victims, Jonas brothers and British guys, but I repeat myself. Also, an obligatory subplot about the horrible toll suffered by the brave Chinese resistance for helping Doolittle's Raiders. Some of the absolute worst "English actors try doing Midcentury regional accents" ever put on film in this one. There is a part that depicts John Ford showing up on Midway to film right before shit pops off. It would have been a much better movie if it had just been about that. Superficial mess. Uninteresting characters withouten any emotions or depth, boring cinematography and a way of storytelling that doesn’t bring anything new to the table. Pearl Harbour isn’t that good, but its still superior to Midway. What is left are plenty of action scene, the main attraction of this movie. It’s a pleasant surprise that the action starts right away, but after 20 minutes it becomes repetitive. Also here it’s nothing new and we all have seen it better. Too much use of green screen which results in action that looks too clean. Well, Emmerich tried. I’m tired. The movie did a great job of telling a complicated story without reducing it to just bang bang shoot shoot. It also did it without pinning the whole story on two or three big names and a romance. It is baffling that they named the film Midway when it actually chronicles seemingly every Pacific skirmish up until that point. I also know the basics of what happens in the battle but it is so poorly explained that I generally had little clue what was happening and why. Roland Emmerich does present some good stylised cinematography (mainly indoor scenes) but the combat is flat and dull. Somehow, it manages to look worse than Bay’s Pearl Harbour which could at least boast impressive action and crunching explosions.
